Prophecy | Brian Carn Ministries

The Word of the Lord for 2018 given by Prophet Brian Carn on December 31, 2017:

  • January: a time to see the transition of speculation in consequence. Many such ideas of “what if this happens to the president?” or “what if that happens?” regarding his removal.
  • February: a time when market watch will be in play. Many will learn of a system or a stock or digital currency to invest in. Many will get wealth by doing so.
  • March: a time when a forced decision will be made overseas. One that is highly controversial.
  • April: a time to gather the approval of the American people. For one specific vision will be implemented with force.
  • May: a time to celebrate. Success has been born. A true change is coming. Especially in regards to how we trade and buy and sell.
  • June: a time of defeat. It will seem that we have tasted defeat and caught by surprise. Next time we will be on the look out and this secret threat will not come again.
  • July: a time of upgraded security. Also a time of independence in patriotism.
  • August: a time of removal. A great removal will be found or suggested. It’s historical consequence will create a new climate in our nation.
  • September: a time of overload. Many people are seeking many questions. A demand has met the eye in the sky and the mission to know more will be in mind.
  • October: a time of seizure, but also a time of surrender. Favor will come to one specific political project.
  • November: a time of departure. The end of one age leads to the beginning of brand new. Awkward will be its feeling.
  • December: a time of remembering an icon; his legacy transcends a generation.
Other Prophecies Given by Prophet Brian Carn on December 31, 2017 at The Crossover & January 2, 2018 via Periscope:

Pray for the children. I saw in a vision so many demons on children. There was a spirit on them where murders were becoming so rampant, where they were focusing more on the age of the person who did the murder rather than the actual murder/incident. But I saw an influx of demonic activity in children. Pray for your children strongly.

There will be fires on the East Coast like there were on the West Coast. Those fires were spiritual, supernatural. I saw in a vision that the fires on the East Coast were so bad that the only thing that stopped it were the prayers of the righteous.

2018 will be a year of history. So many historical events. It is going to get the attention of the world.

The churches that don’t want the prophetic and supernatural, something is going to happen that will make them run to the prophetic. Give it time, sooner or later they will need the voice of the prophet in their churches.

If God doesn’t move for President Trump, something is going to happen where he’s going to be forced to step down.

Watch the months of April, May, June, & July, you’ll see in the news gas prices going up like you’ve never seen before. This shall be a sign that the Lord has spoken to me on this night.

God is getting ready to induce the labor of the church; the church is behind schedule. God is about to “induce their birth” and make them give birth to this baby. He is going to force us back on our knees, force us to get back into the secret place. Whatever He has to take from us to get us on our face and seek Him, He’s going to take it! Nothing shall come before God.

Pray for Billy Graham. A transition is going to happen. When he makes the transition, revival is going to hit the church in a way that you’ve never seen. Continue to pray for his strength.

There is another cryptocurrency that will soar. Talks of regulation will invade government minds.

There will be another Sports controversy similar to Pete Rose (former professional baseball player & manager).

Marijuana will become more legal all over America. More millionaires will be made from this controversial stock in marijuana that is getting ready to soar.

Pray for Men of God like never before. There are a lot of men of God in the way, but they won’t pass the baton; they won’t move, shift, or change. God is saying because they won’t move, He’s about to move them. There is going to be a major shift in the body of Christ.

Seven Major Prophetic Signs Of The Second Coming – Grace thru faith

A Bible Study by Jack Kelley

14th Annual Update January 2015

There are seven major prophetic signs of the Second Coming, and currently all of them are in some stage of fulfillment. As in years past, I’ll list the seven with their primary Biblical references and offer comments from current events. These comments are based on reports from a variety of international news services that have appeared in our daily “Prophecy In The Headlines” feature during the past year.

1. Israel Will Be In The Land … Ezekiel 36:8-12, 37:21

Speaking to the Land God said,
“You, O mountains of Israel, will produce branches and fruit for my people Israel, for they will soon come home. I am concerned for you and will look on you with favor; you will be plowed and sown, and I will multiply the number of people upon you, even the whole house of Israel. The towns will be inhabited and the ruins rebuilt. I will increase the number of men and animals upon you, and they will be fruitful and become numerous. I will settle people on you as in the past and will make you prosper more than before. Then you will know that I am the LORD. I will cause people, my people Israel, to walk upon you. They will possess you, and you will be their inheritance; you will never again deprive them of their children.

And to the people He said,
This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land.

Although Ezekiel wrote these words while the Israelites were in Babylon, they were not fulfilled in the nation’s return from exile there. Like Isaiah before him (Isaiah 11:11) Ezekiel was speaking of the second and final return, not the one after the Babylon captivity. We know this because in Ezekiel 36:12 the Lord said His people would possess the mountains of Israel, and they would never again deprive His people of their children. That means from the time this prophecy was fulfilled there would always be Jewish children born in Israel. And yet in the first century, the nation ceased to exist altogether. Therefore in 1948, when Israel took its place among the nations of the world again for the first time in nearly 2000 years, students of prophecy recognized the fulfillment of the primary sign that the end of the age was upon us.

In 2014 the demand for Israel to at least retreat behind pre 1967 borders has reached a fever pitch again, and some have even gone further. Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, The Islamic State (ISIS – which seemed to come out of nowhere this year and is already an international menace) and other related groups are openly calling for Israel to be wiped off the face of the Earth.

Rocket fire against southern Israel reached an all time high this summer with over 700 rockets from Gaza landing on Israeli soil during a single week. Israel mounted a 50 day military action to stop the rockets and destroy secret underground tunnels Hamas had built under Israel’s southern border. These tunnels would have allowed bands of terrorists to suddenly emerge within Israel and attack the unsuspecting population. Although many of the tunnels were destroyed, the dust had barely settled before Hamas began building more, and demanding that Israel pay for the damage they caused while destroying them.

Also, this year saw a further deterioration of relations between Israel and the US, and for the first time the possibility of US sanctions being imposed against Israel was raised. Russia is also reportedly studying what beneficial effects an attack on Israel might have as a response to the west’s attempts to isolate Russia for destabilizing the Ukraine. Anti-semitism is returning to a level not seen since WW2, several European countries have voted to recognize “The State Of Palestine”, the Israeli government is taking enormous flack for declaring Israel to be a Jewish nation even though it’s charter already says it is, and its Muslim neighbors are enraged over rumors that Israel wants to make it possible for Jews to worship on the Temple Mount.

How much more of this can Israel be expected to take? What other legitimate country in the world is routinely subjected to such attacks? Little do Israel’s enemies know that they are acting against the stated will of God, and the more pressure they apply against Israel, the sooner God Himself will intervene of behalf of His people. Speaking for Him, Ezekiel said, “I will display My glory among the nations and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I will lay upon them” (Ezekiel 39:21).

2. Jerusalem Will Be In Jewish Hands… Luke 21:24

They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

Jesus prophesied that the reunification of Jerusalem as a Jewish City would be a sign that foreign (gentile) influence over the Promised Land, and indeed the world, was coming to an end (Luke 21:24). Fulfillment of this prophecy began in 1967, when Jerusalem became an undivided Jewish city again, and scholars saw it as another major sign that the End of the Age had begun. The almost world wide effort to divide the city again is in essence a battle of wills. Nearly every Israeli leader has stood firmly on a pledge to keep Jerusalem united forever as Israel’s capital, but the unbelieving leaders of the world are just as resolutely determined to see it divided with the Palestinians. At year end, a UN Security Council measure that would have required Israel to make East Jerusalem the capital of a Palestinian state came within one vote of passing. The Palestinian resolution might be resubmitted early in 2015 due to a change in the Security Council’s make up effective January 1.

The Lord said that at the End of the Age He will make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling, an immovable rock for all nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves (Zechariah 12:2-3). This year much of the talk against Israel has been focused on Jerusalem with Hamas and ISIS loudly declaring the time has come to “liberate Jerusalem.” American leaders have joined in, publicly calling East Jerusalem “occupied territory” and demanding that no more Jewish homes be built there. They have even spoken against construction in undisputed neighborhoods of Jerusalem, saying it’s harmful to the “peace process.”

Numerous “lone wolf” attacks have also occurred against civilians in Jerusalem this year with some Palestinians calling for a “Jerusalem Intifada.” Unarmed civilians and even little children have been targeted.

The Bible tells us Jerusalem won’t really be free of Gentile “trampling” until the Lord returns. Daniel’s prophecy that Gentile Dominion will not end until the Lord establishes His kingdom (Daniel 2:36-45), Zechariah’s prophecy of half the city’s inhabitants going into exile just before the Lord’s return (Zech. 14:2), and John’s observation in Rev. 11:1-2 of the Gentiles trampling the outer court of the Temple during the Great Tribulation all confirm this. But even so, the fact that Jerusalem is back in Jewish hands is another big sign that the End is coming soon.

3. A Muslim Coalition Armed And Led By Russia Will Attack The Holy Land… Ezek. 38:2-6

“Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal; prophesy against him. This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army–your horses, your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords. Persia, Cush and Put will be with them, all with shields and helmets, also Gomer with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah from the far north with all its troops–the many nations with you.”

Numerous historical references make it plain that Magog stands for modern Russia, and the other countries named here form a coalition based on their common religion, Islam. Among them are Iran, several North African countries, Eastern European countries along the Danube, and the Turkic nations of Asia Minor. A quick look at a world map will reveal that these areas are home to some of the most radical Islamic groups. (For a detailed explanation of the modern nations to which these Biblical names refer, read “An In Depth Look At The Modern Equivalent To Biblical Names in Ezek.38”)

As I mentioned above, Russia is exploring the possibility of attacking Israel (using Syrian and Hezbollah forces) in retaliation for the US led imposition of sanctions arising from Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula. Additionally, Hamas has come back under Iran’s sponsorship and will soon be headquartered in Tehran. This now gives Iran proxy armies on both the northern (Hezbollah) and southern (Hamas) borders with Israel. Iran has also begun funneling arms into the West Bank with a goal of completely surrounding Israel with a strong, motivated, and well equipped army.

Recent reports also reveal that the US and Iraq are putting together an army of Iraqi Shiite soldiers for the purpose of countering the Sunni ISIS forces, and that this army will be under the direct control of Iran. Iranian sources claim this new army will be even bigger than Hezbollah, which is also Shiite. Iraq will provide the manpower, the US will contribute training, funding and weaponry, and Iran will assume the leadership responsibility. Supplies are already being stockpiled for a major operation against ISIS in 2015.

It doesn’t take much of an imagination to predict that this new army could easily be turned against Israel at the proper time. If so, then the US will have been complicit in helping the Muslim coalition fulfill Ezekiel’s prophecy.

It’s important to remember that Ezekiel 38 calls for a sneak attack on Israel. Currently that prerequisite is the major obstacle to an early fulfillment of Ezekiel’s prophecy. It has to occur at a time when Israel is “a peaceful and unsuspecting people, living without walls or gates” (Ezekiel 38:11) and this certainly is not the case today.

But Psalm 83 and Isaiah 17 are yet-to-be-fulfilled prophecies that, taken together, appear to involve all of Israel’s next door neighbors in another attempt to wipe the Jewish nation off the map. A victory by Israel would explain why these next door neighbors do not appear on Ezekiel’s list of antagonists, although you’d expect them to be at or near the top. It would also explain how Israel could soon be living in a perceived state of safety as Ezekiel 38:11 requires. Currently there doesn’t seem to be any other way for the Israelis to think they’re living at peace with no threat on their borders. The resulting semblance of peace could be just enough to cause Israel to let down its guard, making it vulnerable to attack.

Another prerequisite for Ezekiel’s battle is clearly being met. Until recently, Israel really hasn’t had any wealth to speak of, but offshore oil and gas discoveries, said to be worth billions of dollars, could provide the wealth necessary to make Israel an attractive target for attack. This could fulfill the precondition of Ezekiel 38:13 that Russia will be looking for plunder. These discoveries could make enough natural gas available to supply Israel’s needs for more than 100 years while turning the country from a net importer to a net exporter of natural gas. Russia is already looking for ways to get involved in bringing this gas to market, and according to Ezekiel they’ll eventually go to war in what will turn out to be a failed attempt to do so by force. Ever on guard, Israel has just ordered several more warships from Germany to help protect its offshore oil and gas platforms.

The removal of the US as Israel’s powerful ally is also necessary to pave the way for Ezekiel’s battle. I believe this is well underway. Because of recent experience, many in the Middle East, including Israel, no longer expect the US administration to follow through on its promise to “have Israel’s back” if it should come to that. Add to that the rising threat of a terrorist event in our homeland, our continuing economic struggles, and the nearness of the Rapture of the Church, and it’s becoming a whole lot easier to see how the US could abandon its commitment to Israel.

When the time is right, having recently taken His church to Heaven, the Lord will use this battle to orchestrate His reconciliation with Israel, and on its heels the anti Christ will emerge with a peace plan that includes a Jewish Temple. So once this battle takes place, end times prophecy will really go on fast forward.

4. The Ancient Roman Empire Will Re-Emerge As A Political Force… Rev 17:9-10

“This calls for a mind with wisdom. The seven heads are seven hills on which the woman sits. They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for a little while.”

This one is a little obscure if you don’t know your history. When John was writing this, about 95AD, there had been five great world powers; Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, and Greece. All had been conquered and absorbed. The current power was Rome, which was never really conquered and will re-emerge at the end of the age.

About 600 years earlier, the Prophet Daniel had spoken of a period of time theologians call Gentile Dominion that gives us added insight into Rev. 17:9-10. In Daniel 2:36-45 Gentile Dominion is symbolized by a giant statue that Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, had dreamed about. Egypt and Assyria had recently been defeated by Nebuchadnezzar, and Daniel said the statue represented the four remaining Gentile kingdoms, which we know as Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. In the dream, Babylon was the head of the statue and was made of gold. Persia was the chest and arms, made of silver. Greece was the belly and thighs of bronze, followed by the two appearances of Rome, two legs of iron (Biblical Rome) and two feet of iron mixed with clay (the revived Roman Empire). After that God would set up His own, eternal, kingdom.

There are some interesting details in the description of the two feet upon which the statue stands. Remember, they represent the end times version of the Roman Empire. Let’s read it.

Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay (Daniel 2:41-43).

In the first place iron and clay don’t mix. We can imagine sticky clay serving as glue that holds pieces of iron together, but the language describes a clay that’s already baked, hard and brittle like shards of pottery.

You can’t make random pieces of iron and pottery adhere, and according to Daniel 2:41-43 this will be the end times empire’s insurmountable problem. Today the western leg is known as Europe while the Eastern leg consists of the Islamic nations of the Middle East. Although the world is currently focused on the economic challenges Europe faces, ultimately the number one issue of this end times empire will be that of integrating the vastly dissimilar cultures of the western and eastern legs. They are just too different to be blended and already the failure of the European social experiment called multi-culturalism has become evident. Throughout the end times the revived Roman Empire will be partly strong (eastern leg) and partly brittle (western leg) and will not adhere.

I’m convinced the aggressive and growing culture of the eastern leg (Islam) will overtake the dying culture of the west and become the dominant voice of Europe. Recent claims by ISIS predict major inroads into Spain and eastern Europe in the coming year, and current growth trends show that Islam will be the dominant religion in the UK within 10 years. Only France and Germany seem to be pushing back against the growth of Islam in their countries. Nevertheless, the prophecy clearly shows both divisions present until the Lord returns to set up His Kingdom, putting an end to Gentile Dominion forever, whether Islamic or not. (Daniel 2:44).

5. The World Will Embrace A Single Religion… Rev 13:8

All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast–all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.

Islam is a major religious force in the world today and its goal is nothing less than world domination, by any means necessary. It’s the world’s fastest growing religion and is second only to Christianity in number of adherents. Already nearly one out of every four inhabitants of the world is Muslim. I’m no prophet, but as I look into the future, it’s much easier for me to see Islam riding its current wave of momentum to fill the void left by the departure of the Church than it is to imagine some watered down mix of apostate Christianity and New Age Mysticism doing so.

By now most serious students of the end times are aware of Muslim prophecies of the one they call alMahdi and their striking resemblance to Christian prophecies of the anti-Christ. For example, both show a leader coming on the scene during a time of great turmoil on Earth. Both depict him as man of peace who will have a seven year reign, head up a one world religion and one world government, and claim supernatural origins. Both prophecies culminate in a battle between good and evil that brings about Earth’s final judgment. It’s as if they’re pointing to the same person. The difference is that in Islam he’s a good guy, while the Bible calls him evil.

Take this charismatic political and religious leader with his supernatural power, add the widely held but incorrect belief that God and Allah are the same, and that Islam is a religion of peace, and then subtract the spirit of discernment that will disappear with the Church and you can see how this charismatic Islamic leader could unite a frightened world on the brink of disaster.

Currently there’s an ongoing battle between the two major sects of Islam, the Shiites and the Sunnis. A substantial majority of Muslims are Sunnis (1.2 Billion) while only 200 million are Shiite. They agree on many aspects of their faith but are sharply divided when it comes to which sect will control the Islamic world.

You can see this in real time with ISIS (Sunni) attacking Shiites in Iraq and Syria, and with Iran (Shiite) in league with the West against them. Also, some observers believe a major factor in the current oil price war is due to Saudi Arabia’s (Sunni) attempt to bring arch rival Iran (Shiite) to ruin. The fact that Russia, a friend of Iran’s and a major competitor of Saudi Arabia, is also on the economic ropes because of this price war is frosting on the cake for the Saudis. Saudi Arabia has massive oil reserves and can afford to undersell the market for years if necessary to destroy its enemies/competitors.

(It will be interesting to see how the US fares in all this. Right now we’re enjoying the lowest gasoline prices in years. But Saudi Arabia’s goal is to undercut America too, since our burgeoning shale oil production has made the US a major threat to Saudi dominance that has to be eliminated. US industry sources are predicting as many as 550 drilling rigs will be idled within the first quarter of 2015 since current market prices for oil are below US production costs. That’s about 25% of America’s rigs. The entire world economy could be further destabilized by this price war. The blessing of low prices at the gas pumps could soon become a curse.)

6. The World Will Accept A Single Government… Rev 13:3

The whole world was astonished and followed the beast.

When you look at the deteriorating shape of the world today, it doesn’t take much to imagine conditions getting to a point where people will cry out for a leader who can bring order out of chaos. Whether the issue is climate change, the decline of the US dollar, the slow motion economic collapse of Europe, war in the Middle East, or the price of oil, the one solution most leaders agree on is the need for some form of coordinated world government. With the things that already threaten our stability getting worse by the day, how much more frantic will people be after millions of their neighbors suddenly disappear in the rapture without warning or explanation, and there’s been a war (Ezekiel 38) that brings destruction from Europe through the Middle East and into Russia? When people become convinced that their problems cannot be solved by human means alone they look to the supernatural for answers. In this regard, Paul wrote:

The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing (2 Thes 2 :9-10)

A leader who promises to restore peace and safety and demonstrates miraculous power that astonishes everyone will quickly be given the reins of world government. By many accounts, this lawless one is standing in the wings as you read this, awaiting his cue.

7. Babylon Will Re-Emerge As A Prominent City In World Affairs… Rev 18:2-3

With a mighty voice he shouted: “Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! She has become a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit, a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird. For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.”

You may not realize this, but Babylon is being made ready to accept its destiny as a focus of world power in the end times. It’s just a ceremonial city right now, but 25 years ago nobody even knew it existed at all. One of the shocks of Gulf War 1 was the discovery of Babylon standing there on the banks of the Euphrates River. Today there’s a concerted effort underway to complete what Saddam Hussein began and return Babylon to world prominence.

But more has already been accomplished than most people think. For example, if you take a close look at the dimensions and capabilities of the new US embassy in Baghdad you will see how easily it could be prepared to house a world governmental headquarters. At 104 acres, it is the largest and most expensive embassy in the world, and is nearly as large as Vatican City. Babylon is only about an hour away by car.

In addition, one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces overlooks ancient Babylon and has been completely restored as a hotel and tourist destination. It could easily house the anti-Christ and his entourage. Finally, there are several large military installations nearby as well. In short, preparing Babylon to become the capitol of the world won’t take anywhere near as long as most people think.

Because of Babylon’s current lack of importance in the world, some students of prophecy search for an allegorical fulfillment of its destruction described in Rev. 18, and of course many see the USA or some American city as a logical candidate. But remember, even though in Revelation 17:9 John describes “mystery Babylon” as seated on seven hills, a prophecy in Zechariah 5:5-11 shows it being moved “to the plains of Shinar” a reference to ancient Mesopotamia called Iraq today. We can’t switch from literal to allegorical interpretations of Scripture without clear direction, and where Babylon is concerned no such direction exists. In fact the opposite is true. Almost from the beginning, the Bible has been a tale of two cities. Jerusalem is the city of God while Babylon has always been the city of man. Both disappeared from the world stage for many centuries, but when Jerusalem came back it was to its original location. The Bible says the same will be true of Babylon.

Birth Pains … Matt. 24:6-8

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

Experts said the big things to watch for in 2014 would be the actions of nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there’s no sign of a let up in 2015. All around the globe nations are either preparing for war or at war. In the Middle East, we could easily see the fulfillment of Psalm 83 and Isaiah 17.

In the Far East, China is building up its military capabilities. According to a recent US Department of Defense report, “the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is engaged in a massive, extensive modernization program, drawing upon the resources of a constantly expanding economy (now the world’s second largest) to support these improvements. In addition to the ground forces, the PLA Navy, the PLA Air Force, the Second Artillery (China’s rocket forces), as well as space and cyber-espionage capabilities are all being expanded and upgraded.” In 2014 China launched its first aircraft carrier, nuclear armed submarines, and a stealth fighter aircraft. In addition to the obvious threat this poses to China’s neighbors, it has also been reported that China eventually expects to go to war against the US.

Africa has become a major battleground as forces loyal to Islam continue in their efforts to gain control of the continent. Somalia and Sudan, the Congo, and Libya are but a few of the hot spots that have created millions of refugees and internally displaced people. Thousands of people have been slaughtered from a number of conflicts and civil wars on the African continent.

There will be big problems in the EU if they can’t stabilize their economy in 2015. World financial leaders have warned that Europe’s failure to resolve their difficulties will plunge the world back into an even worse recession than the one we’ve supposedly just come out of. Predictions are being made of widespread civil unrest as the consequence of Europe’s failure to solve its economic problems.

Food prices remain uncertain and experts warn us not to relax. The price of food will continue to be volatile and among the poor will still consume more than 45% of household income. Already 1 out of every 6 people in the world goes to bed hungry every night. Experts have said it would only take one or two years of poor crop production to bring a serious famine to the world. Here in America, participation in the food stamp program has dropped to 46 million from its high of 48 million in 2012. (Much of the decline was due to several states adding work requirements to the qualification process, causing people to drop out.) Even so, two thirds of all children in the US now receive some kind of welfare assistance.

But many places in the world don’t have a government willing or able to go into debt to feed them. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, one person out of eight in the world’s population suffers from chronic undernourishment. Half of the world’s 10.9 million child deaths each year is at least partly due to undernourishment. That works out to 6,000 children every day.

Most experts have finally agreed that earthquakes have steadily become more frequent in recent years. They are now an everyday occurrence, averaging in excess of 3 earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or higher somewhere in the world every day. Some services are now routinely tracking volcanic eruptions as well, noting that their frequency is also increasing.

The Lord said these birth pangs would be the early warning signs of the approaching End of the Age, so I have included the above examples to confirm my belief that we’re very close to our last days on Earth. While predictions of what 2015 may bring are all over the spectrum, Christians needn’t worry because we walk by faith not by sight (2 Cor. 5:7). Our citizenship is in Heaven and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ (Phil. 3:20). Therefore, having seen these things beginning to take place we stand up and lift up our heads because our redemption is drawing near (Luke 21:28). These promises have never been more important to us than they will be in 2015. 01-03-15.

3. What Is A Prophet?

In chapter one we made frequent references to the holy prophets. This raised a very important question; “What do we mean when we speak of prophets, and who are prophets?” We must find what the Bible says about this subject.

The first person in the Bible to be called a prophet was Abraham, the “Father of the Faithful.” It is important to notice also, that it was God who gave him this title. The story is found in Genesis 20:6-7. A heathen prince had taken Abraham’s wife, and God commanded him to restore her, saying of Abraham, “he is a prophet. . . .” (the Hebrew word is “nabi” as it is also in Arabic). Without doubt there were other men before Abraham who were prophets. Enoch was one, for instance (compare Genesis 5:24 with Jude 14). But Abraham was the first person to be designated a prophet by the clear Word of God. Many God-appointed prophets arose after Abraham. They were chosen from many walks of life. Moses was adopted in infancy by an Egyptian princess and thus received a prince’s education. (Read in your Bible, for example, Exodus 2:5-10; Acts 7:21-22.) Ezekiel and Jeremiah were priests as well as prophets. David was first a shepherd, then warrior, king and poet and a prophet as well. Amos was a herdsman (Amos 1:1). Elisha was a plowman (1 Kings 19:15-21). Daniel was a government administrator (Daniel 2:48). From such diverse backgrounds, God chose His prophets. Their influence and authority did not come from their rank, education, wisdom or wealth, but entirely from the fact that God chose them to be His messengers. So we may define a prophet as one appointed by God Himself to be His messenger. Now we must examine the Bible to expand this brief definition. Notice first that God chose His messengers. The following Scriptures demonstrate this:

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go out from your country, your relatives, and your father’s household to the land that I will show you. Then I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, so that you will exemplify divine blessing. I will bless those who bless you, but the one who treats you lightly I must curse, and all the families of the earth will bless one another by your name.” So Abram left, just as the Lord had told him to do, and Lot went with him. (Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.) (Genesis 12:1-4).

Now Moses was shepherding the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to the mountain of God, to Horeb. The Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from within a bush. He looked—and the bush was ablaze with fire, but it was not being consumed! So Moses thought, “I will turn aside to see this amazing sight. Why does the bush not burn up?” When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to look, God called to him from within the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” God said, “Do not come near here. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” He also said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Then Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. The Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt. I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from that land to a land that is both good and large, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the region of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. And now, indeed, the cry of the Israelites has come to me, and I have also seen how severely the Egyptians oppress them. So now, go, and I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.” Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, or that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” He replied, “Surely I will be with you, and this will be the sign to you that I have sent you: When you bring the people out of Egypt, you and they will serve God on this mountain.” (Exodus 3:1-12).

Then the Lord came and stood nearby, calling as he had previously done, “Samuel! Samuel!” Samuel replied, “Speak, for your servant is listening!” The Lord said to Samuel, “Look! I am about to do something in Israel; when anyone hears about it, both of his ears will tingle.” (1 Samuel 3:10-11).

The Lord said to me, “Before I formed you in your mother’s womb I chose you. Before you were born I set you apart. I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.” I answered, “Oh, Lord God, I really do not know how to speak well enough for that, for I am too young. The Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ But go to whomever I send you and say whatever I tell you. Do not be afraid of those to whom I send you, for I will be with you to rescue you,” says the Lord. Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I will most assuredly give you the words you are to speak for me. Know for certain that I hereby give you the authority to announce to nations and kingdoms that they will be uprooted and torn down, destroyed and demolished, rebuilt and firmly planted.” (Jeremiah 1:5-10).

God in His wisdom chose men who would obey Him faithfully and He gave them authority to speak on His behalf. Prophets were not chosen or elected by men, and they were not permitted to inherit the title or regard it as an official post to be filled by a man specially trained for it.

Notice also that God told them what to do. We may find example of the work of a true prophet in a number of references as follows. Their work was:

1. To reveal the nature and attributes of God to men.

The following Scriptures show this:

The Lord spoke face to face with you at the mountain, from the middle of the fire. (I was standing between the Lord and you then to reveal to you the message of the Lord, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain.) He said: “I am the Lord your God, he who brought you from the land of Egypt, from the place of slavery. You must not have any other gods besides me. You must not make for yourself an image of anything in heaven above, on earth below, or in the waters beneath. You must not worship or serve them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. I punish the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons for the sin of the fathers who reject me, but I show covenant faithfulness to the thousands who choose me and keep my commandments.” (Deuteronomy 5:4-10).

The Lord spoke to Moses: “Speak to the whole congregation of the Israelites and tell them, ‘You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy. Each of you must respect his mother and his father, and you must keep my Sabbaths. I am the Lord your God. Do not turn to idols, and you must not make for yourselves gods of cast metal. I am the Lord your God.’” (Leviticus 19:1-4).

2. To make known to men the laws of God.

For example Exodus 20:1-17 says:

And God spoke all these words: “I, the Lord, am your God, who brought you from the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on earth under it, or that is in the water below. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, who visits the iniquity of fathers on children, even to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but who extends faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold guiltless anyone who takes his name in vain. Remember the Sabbath day to sanctify it. For six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; on it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your cattle, or your resident foreigner who is in your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and sanctified it. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land the Lord your God is giving to you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

3. To call the people back to obedience to God’s laws.

Read 2 Chronicles 24:19— The Lord sent prophets among them to lead them back to him. They warned the people, but they would not pay attention.

4. To exhort the people to sincerity in worship.

An example of this is found in Jeremiah 7:1-11:

The Lord said to Jeremiah: “Stand in the gate of the Lord’s temple and proclaim this message: ‘Listen, all you people of Judah who have passed through these gates to worship the Lord. Hear what the Lord has to say. The Lord God of Israel who rules over all says: Change the way you have been living and do what is right. If you do, I will let you continue to live in this land. Stop putting your confidence in the delusive belief that says, “We are safe! The temple of the Lord is here! The temple of the Lord is here! The temple of the Lord is here!” You must change the way you have been living and do what is right. You must treat one another fairly. Stop oppressing foreigners who live in your land, children who have lost their fathers, and women who have lost their husbands. Stop killing innocent people in this land. Stop paying allegiance to other gods. That will only bring about your ruin. If you do all this, I will let you continue to live here in this land which I gave to your ancestors as a lasting possession. “‘But just look at you! You are putting your confidence in a false way of thinking that will not help you at all. You steal. You murder. You commit adultery. You lie when you swear on oath. You sacrifice to the god Baal. You pay allegiance to other gods that you do not really know. Then you come and stand here in my presence in this house I have claimed as my own and say, “We are safe!” You think you are so safe that you go on doing all those hateful sins! Do you think this house I have claimed as my own is to be a hideout for robbers? You had better take note! I have seen for myself what you have done! says the Lord.’”

5. To warn them of Divine judgment upon sin, both personal and national.

See Jeremiah 36:30-31:

So the Lord says concerning King Jehoiakim of Judah, “None of his line will occupy the throne of David. And his dead body will be thrown out to be exposed to scorching heat by day and frost by night. I will punish him and his descendants and the officials who serve him for the wicked things they have done. I will bring on them and the citizens of Jerusalem and the people of Judah all the disaster that I threatened to do to them. I will punish them because I threatened them but they still paid no heed.”

6. To foretell future events which God had willed.

A good illustration of this would be Jeremiah 30:1-3:

The Lord spoke to Jeremiah. He said, “The Lord God of Israel who rules over all says, ‘Write everything that I am about to tell you in a scroll. For I, the Lord affirm that the time will come when I will reverse the fortunes of my people, Israel and Judah,’ says the Lord. ‘I will bring them back to the land I gave their ancestors and they will take possession of it once again.’”

7. To foretell the coming of the Messiah, the Savior.

See for example Isaiah 9:6:

For a child has been born to us, a son has been given to us. He shoulders responsibility and is called: Extraordinary Strategist, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

8. To record the history of God’s dealings with men.

An example of this is in Deuteronomy 31:9-13:

Then Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carry the ark of the Lord’s covenant, and to all Israel’s elders. He commanded them: “At the end of seven years, at the appointed time of the cancellation of debts, at the Feast of Temporary Shelters, when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God in the place he chooses, you must read this law before them within their hearing. Gather the people—men, women, and children, as well as the resident foreigners in your villages—so they may hear and thus learn about and fear the Lord your God and carefully obey all the words of this law. Then their children, who have not known this law, will also hear about and learn to fear the Lord your God for as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

9. To record the Word of God in the Holy Scriptures.

The following are examples of this:

And the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in the book, and rehearse it in Joshua’s hearing; for I will surely wipe out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens.” (Exodus 17:14).

And the Lord said to Moses, “Write these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” (Exodus 34:27).

So on that day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites, and the Lord commissioned Joshua son of Nun, “Be strong and courageous, for you will take the Israelites to the land I have promised them, and I will be with you.” When Moses finished writing on a scroll the words of this law in their entirety, he commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the Lord’s covenant, “Take this scroll of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. It will remain there as a witness against you” (Deuteronomy 31:22-26).

The Lord spoke to Jeremiah in the fourth year that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was ruling over Judah. He said, “Get a scroll. Write on it everything I have told you to say about Israel, Judah, and all the other nations since I began to speak to you in the reign of Josiah until now. (Jeremiah 36:1-2).

The Lord spoke to Jeremiah after Jehoiakim had burned the scroll containing what Jeremiah had spoken and Baruch had written down. He said, “Get another scroll and write on it everything that was written on the original scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah burned.” (Jeremiah 36:27-28).

This list is by no means complete but it shows the importance of the work of a prophet. Even the humblest and most ordinary men became important, influential and authoritative in Israel when called to be prophets. Some prophets were called to challenge the whole nation (1 Kings 18:21), or to rebuke evil kings (1 Kings 21:17-24; Daniel 5:17-28) and many were given power to perform miracles to support their authority. An example of this is in Exodus l7:5-6 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go over before the people; take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand your rod with which you struck the Nile and go. I will be standing before you there on the rock in Horeb, and you will strike the rock, and water will come out of it so that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in plain view of the elders of Israel. In the nation of Israel, prophets were more important than kings, warriors or priests.

Because the prophets were so influential, it is not surprising that early in history, false prophets appeared, pretending to be God’s messengers in order to support their own ambitions for power, authority and personal advancement. Because of this, God gave clear instructions to the people to examine the credentials of all who claimed to be prophets. These Divine instructions are found in Deuteronomy 18:9-22. This paragraph is so important that the student should read it before going any further with this lesson. Here it is:

When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, you must not learn the abhorrent practices of those nations. There must never be found among you anyone who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, anyone who practices divination, an omen reader, a soothsayer, a sorcerer, one who casts spells, one who conjures up spirits, a practitioner of the occult, or a necromancer. Whoever does these things is abhorrent to the Lord and because of these things the Lord your God is about to drive them out from before you. You must be blameless before the Lord your God. Those nations that you are about to dispossess listen to omen readers and diviners, but the Lord your God has not given you permission to do such things. The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you—from your fellow Israelites; you must listen to him. This accords with what happened at Horeb in the day of the assembly. You asked the Lord your God: “Please do not make us hear the voice of the Lord our God any more or see this great fire any more lest we die.” The Lord then said to me, “What they have said is good. I will raise up a prophet like you for them from among their fellow Israelites. I will put my words in his mouth and he will speak to them whatever I command. I will personally hold responsible anyone who then pays no attention to the words that prophet speaks in my name. “But if any prophet presumes to speak anything in my name that I have not authorized him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die. Now if you say to yourselves, ‘How can we tell that a message is not from the Lord?’— whenever a prophet speaks in my name and the prediction is not fulfilled, then I have not spoken it; the prophet has presumed to speak it, so you need not fear him.”

Notice that God warned the people that all pagan practices and customs were strictly forbidden. In particular, God warned them not to seek help or guidance through occult practices like divination, witchcraft or necromancy (the belief that spirits of dead people can be used to obtain help). We are expressly told, Whoever does these things is abhorrent to the Lord. As these practices were strictly forbidden, how were the people of Israel to obtain help and guidance? God gave them a clear answer; I will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you. . . . God would not permit pagan methods of seeking help, but He would appoint His own prophets through whom He would speak and guide those who desired to know the truth. From this important Scripture we find certain definite rules by which the people could know a true prophet sent by God.

We have already explained that this name of God, used so frequently in the Bible, was spelled by the Hebrew consonants Y.H.W.H. and was probably pronounced Yahweh, but is found in our English Bibles either as Jehovah or more often as Lord. In the passage just quoted we find 10 occurrences of this Divine title. God, speaking through Moses, made it clear that only those prophets who spoke in the name of Jehovah were to be accepted.

Verse 18 says he shall be from among their fellow Israelites. Moses was speaking to Israelites and it is clear that he said that God would raise up a prophet from among you (verse 15). This same expression (fellow Israelites) is found in Deuteronomy 3:18 and Deuteronomy 17:15 where God said that the future kings of Israel must be chosen from among their brethren—they were not to set a foreigner over them as their king. Thus it is clear the prophet must be an Israelite.

God’s message is often rejected by sinful men because God demands obedience to His Word, but a true prophet will not try to make his message popular. A false prophet however appeals to popular enthusiasm. Notice the example in Isaiah 30:8-11 where the people ask the false prophets to prophesy nice things—Now go, write it down on a tablet in their presence, inscribe it on a scroll, so that it might be saved for a future time as an enduring witness. For these are rebellious people—they are lying children, children unwilling to obey the Lord’s law. They say to the visionaries, “See no more visions!” and to the seers, “Don’t relate messages to us about what is right! Tell us nice things, relate deceptive messages. Turn aside from the way, stray off the path. Remove from our presence the sovereign king of Israel.” Jeremiah shows us that a true prophet does not invent his message—he is inspired by God— Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I will most assuredly give you the words you are to speak for me.” (Jeremiah 1:9).

Again Jeremiah gives a clear illustration of this. Read Jeremiah 14:14-16:

Then the Lord said to me, “Those prophets are prophesying lies while claiming my authority. I did not send them. I did not commission them. And I did not speak to them. They are just prophesying to these people false visions, worthless predictions, and the delusions of their own mind. I did not send those prophets, though they claim to be prophesying in my authority. They may be saying, ‘No war or famine will happen in this land.’ But I, the Lord, say this about them: ‘War and starvation will kill those prophets.’ And the people to whom they are prophesying will die through war and famine. Their bodies will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem and they won’t even be buried. That will happen to the men and their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out on them the destruction they deserve.”

God had told Jeremiah to announce that Jerusalem would be captured by the Babylonian army, as a punishment for the sins of the people. False prophets opposed Jeremiah and denied his words, suggesting that he was a traitor. But God said that the false prophets themselves would die by the sword of the Babylonians. This was literally fulfilled, and thus the words of Jeremiah were proved to be God’s message, while the popular message of the false prophets was shown to be lies, even though they had dared to use the name of Jehovah. A similar incident is seen in 1 Kings 22:5-28 where Micaiah was sent to prison for speaking God’s word, but the king who foolishly believed the words of the false prophets was killed in battle.

This commandment is found in the following Scriptures:

Suppose a prophet or one who foretells by dreams should appear among you and show you a sign or wonder, and the sign or wonder should come to pass concerning what he said to you, namely, “Let us follow other gods”—gods whom you have not previously known—“and let us serve them.” You must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer, for the Lord your God will be testing you to see if you love him with all your mind and being. You must follow the Lord your God and revere only him; and you must observe his commandments, obey him, serve him, and remain loyal to him. As for that prophet or dreamer, he must be executed because he encouraged rebellion against the Lord your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, redeeming you from the place of slavery, and because he has tried to entice you from the way the Lord your God has commanded you to go. In this way you must purge out evil from within (Deuteronomy 13:1-5)

But if any prophet presumes to speak anything in my name that I have not authorized him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die (Deuteronomy 18:20)

The severity of this penalty emphasizes how dangerous false prophets are. No matter how important a person might be, or however closely he might be related to the king or anyone who might help decide his fate, he was to be treated as a traitor if he dared to speak a message that turned people away from the worship of Jehovah.

In all these verses notice the constant emphasis on the words, the Lord (Jehovah) your God. Pagan nations had degraded the meaning of the word God (Elohim) to include their idols, and so God the Creator stated that henceforth He would be known by His personal name, Jehovah. Not only was this a distinguishing feature of the worship of the One True God, but we find that the oft-repeated expression the name of the Lord was a Hebrew idiom which means “in the authority of the Lord” and “in the character of the Lord.” Thus a prophet who spoke in the name of Jehovah was speaking by the authority of Jehovah and in the character of Jehovah. Jehovah is holy, therefore the message must be holy in character and the messenger must likewise display the holiness of life which would be evidence of his truthfulness.

All prophets were to be tested thus concerning the origin of their words, and the meaning and the purpose of their teaching. That teaching must come from Jehovah; it must be true to the earlier revelation of the character of Jehovah, and it must be designed to encourage men to be faithful to Jehovah. Put these points together and you will find God’s method for testing the credentials of a true prophet:

1. He must be a true Israelite.

2. He must speak in the name of the Lord (Jehovah).

3. He must call men to living obedience to Jehovah and worship of Jehovah.

4. He must be tested and vindicated by the fulfillment of predictions made by him in the name of Jehovah, by the authority of Jehovah and in keeping with the character of Jehovah.

This explains why the prophets of the Old Testament and the apostles in the New Testament were members of the Hebrew (Israelite) people. Apart from these Biblical prophets and apostles, no man has ever been known to fulfill the Divine requirements laid down in the above verses. Many men have claimed to be leaders, teachers and prophets, but when we examine their credentials, we find that they were not members of the Hebrew race, nor did they speak in the name of Jehovah.

Thus the Bible alone contains the authentic teachings of God’s chosen messengers, prophets and apostles, and although the message of the Bible is not a popular one that appeals to the hearts of proud men, it is the Word of God and shows the way to eternal life.

There is one final comment which is of vital importance to this study. We have noted that God revealed the criteria for the recognition of a true prophet. But the verses in Deuteronomy 18 go further than that. They contain a definite prediction of the coming of a specific prophet. The Jews always understood this verse to be a clear promise concerning the coming Messiah. This is clear from the following verses. Read for example John 1:19-23 and note that when John the Baptist began to preach, he was asked, “Are you the Prophet?” Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed—he did not deny but confessed—“I am not the Christ!” So they asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not!” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No!” Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us so that we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” John said, “I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.” Also in John 6:14 we see how the people, impressed by the power of Jesus, said, Now when the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus performed, they began to say to one another, “This is certainly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” In John 7:40 again the people said, When they heard these words, some of the crowd began to say, “This really is the Prophet!” It is clear that the Jewish people expected a precise and personal fulfillment of this prophecy and when John the Baptist appeared they thought he was The Prophet, but John humbly disclaimed that honor, and directed their attention to Jesus—(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) So they asked John, “Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not recognize, who is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal!” These things happened in Bethany across the Jordan River where John was baptizing. On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one about whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is greater than I am, because he existed before me.’” (John 1:24-30). The people then recognized Jesus as the Prophet. The people were right in thus recognizing Jesus as The Prophet. The Apostle Peter clearly taught that the great prediction was completely fulfilled in Jesus Christ. We read Therefore repent and turn back so that your sins may be wiped out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and so that he may send the Messiah appointed for you—that is, Jesus. This one heaven must receive until the time all things are restored, which God declared from times long ago through his holy prophets. Moses said, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must obey him in everything he tells you. Every person who does not obey that prophet will be destroyed and thus removed from the people” And all the prophets, from Samuel and those who followed him, have spoken about and announced these days You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your ancestors, saying to Abraham, “And in your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed.’ God raised up his servant and sent him first to you, to bless you by turning each one of you from your iniquities.” (Acts 3:19-26).

This one short paragraph then in Deuteronomy 18 contains remarkable truth. It sets out for all time the criteria for the recognition of a true prophet, and also a prediction of the coming of The True Prophet, a prediction which was finally and perfectly fulfilled in the coming of Jesus Christ. When Jesus came to the Jews, He fulfilled all the conditions of the prediction in Deuteronomy and thus His disciples accepted Him as the promised Prophet and Messiah. So certain is this fact that the Apostle Peter said, Every person who does not obey that prophet will be destroyed and thus removed from the people.’ (Acts 3:23). This is a solemn warning to those who reject the claims of Jesus Christ.

Yes. You heard me correctly: ignore Bushiri at your own political peril (read political defeat). For some reasons, speculation is none of my anatomy but you see, Papa (or is it Pope?)Major 1 Prophet Shepard Bushiri ( due to space limitation accorded to this article, allow me to denote him with just “Bushiri” although all protocols have been observed – thus where I have used the name Bushiri barely without the associated colours and titles, please feel to add as many suffixes as you can) has more than countable times hinted that he has no and harbors none of the political ambitions. In his own words, seeking ownership of title-deed of plot Number 1 in Area 41, (state house) will be a demotion to him. He routinely asserts the supremacy of his prophetic calling to the state presidency.

Declaration of “assets” and interest is not done honestly in Malawi – as some scary liquid cash in bedrooms is rarely listed on form – but allow me to do so now: I am neither a follower of Bushiri nor his fun. But I find him too visible to ignore. I have neither met nor interacted with him. If an opportunity avails itself and with his permission I will ask serve him with several questions on issues that do not add up to me: the source of his wealth

being one such question. But again, he is not obliged to tell me so I can as well just speculate.Of course it is not an anathema to seek a lesser societal role but I have no reason to doubt his declaration and stance so far. As a public figure, I am sure he knows the calamity that befalls on those who do not stick to their pronouncements. However, given the fact that nobody knows the inner motives of Bushiri except God and himself, I am at liberty to speculate -against my usual habit- a myriad probabilities between now and 2019.

As somebody endowed with conspicuousness not only to Malawi but the entire continent, Bushiri inevitably ought to be a source of calculated speculation to the incumbent regime. Put plainly, DPP should not ignore Bushiri at all cost. None of the breathing creatures in Malawi has any political and strategic missile to dislodge DPP other than Bushiri and that is why he should not be completely ruled. I will revert to key angles from which Bushiri poses a formidable threat to DPP in a moment. I know for toddlers of political analytics, Dr Chakwera is DPP’s threat. This is the cheapest analysis you can buy on the market and can only be done by those who pride in suppressing data that defy their politically charged hypothesis.

I hate to say it but DPP is too sophisticated for the unprepared MCP. MCP’s arsenals and strategies (if there are any) are just either so amateurish or archaic to counter DPP’s. In any case, MCP is packed with “veterans” whose Pareto (maximum) satisfaction level is just putting on a an MP badge. The party is just sickly comfortable being in opposition and pseudo-ruling the central region “parliamentarily”. If you ask those that contend otherwise, their only variable of analysis is the level of blunders committed by DPP. What a cheap analysis!

You see, winning the polls in 2019 (just like any) is a combination of push and pull factors. Push factors (such as DPPs current blunders) and pull factors (strategy of the alternative, MCP in this case) are what cause an opposition party to win. If push factor was the only variable, MCP would have won in 2014 because it was the better devil compared to DPP. Beyond roping in Sidik Mia (I will tackle this in my next episode) and listing down the blunders of DPP, the strategy of MCP is not clear.

Chakwera thus remains a very marketable product surrounded by zealous marketers who prefer to sell a cup of tea at 12 noon in the month of October in Chikwawa district and a bottle of cold coke in Dedza at 5 am 8th June. In the processes, Dr. Chakwera is a loner in the game surrounded by people who cannot translate, dilute and simplify into edible and audible products the deep insights and expositions bundled in his parliamentary utterances to the rural masses: Rest in Peace!

It appears I suffer from “digressiosis” – the tendency of frequently digressing from main topic. I promised to prickle the angles from which Bushiri can never be ignored politically.

First, and this is obvious: none of the marketing gurus in the country can outsmart Bushiri’s team in the trade. Bushiri’s strength is not his money but his ability to assemble the best PR and marketing team that does just the right thing: selling the Bushiri brand. It is the strategy that takes the brand to those that dont believe in him whereas for those that subscribe to his prophetic modus operandi, get further addictive concortion.

Only DPP’s 2009 campaign team comes close to Bushiri’s current marketing squad in scores. Bushiri’s own penchant for world class and quality events and marketing processes leaves the present parties in iron age. His pursuit for quality events has undoubted potential to shake even a district considered a bedroom of any

present party

. Ignore him at your wish! You can administer a self-appeasing pill that people cant take him serious that far but try putting your rally close to his and see if you can have a tenth of his legions!

Secondly, in a poverty laden society of ours, the power of generosity and handouts should never be discounted. Bakili Muluzi knew this and rightly tapped on it. Holding the mystery that sorround the source of his wealth constant, Bushiri has proved to be long handed even to those that have approached him. And when he gives, he gives in full measure. Not only does he do it in full measure, but he also does it frequently in high impact areas – areas where the votes do numerically matter such as sports and food relief. Now that it is in government, DPPs added advantage is its control of the government purse.

In the present circumstances, the only formidable force to dislodge DPP needs to have equal resources or more than resources commanded by DPP (which is the sum of DPP’s resources obtained legitimately and illegitimately). Is anybody capable of vouching apart from the Major one?

Politics is about people and being able to connect with the masses. Bushiri scores well in this regard. While he has managed to create the impression that he is highly secured person (see the body guards that surround him), Bushiri has capably proved that he can be easily accessed by any interested group. Forget about the consultations that I hear you need to book and pay, but it is equally confirmed that he does meet any group of individuals that want to meet him – of course to beg. Nothing excites an ordinary man than easiness to meet a high profile personnel. While the DPP diehards compete in crowding out the people that want access to the leader, Bushiri’s team opens up and diligently allows in audiences with him amidst his tight schedule. Am I reading too much?

Fourthly, the impact of physical energy levels in any candidate is of enormous important. Out of the current line-up, Bushiri is the most youthful and energetic of all. In case you did not know: the leadership convention nowadays is for leaders to control their body weight and remain fresh as much as possible. A friend just confirmed how Bushiri manages to personally handle maize distribution from the first to the last person even under the scotching sun. Fitness is a unique discipline and if he was to embark on whistle stop tour, he would be the least tired but most productive campaigner.

Fifthly, a leader in the making sits close to those who have been there before. Isnt this what Bushiri is doing? Isnt he close to Joyce Banda and Brown Mpinganjira? And what explains the string of politicians such as Lucious Banda, Bon ‘Winiko Kalindo, Kamlepo Kalua and now Enoch Chihana in the circle of Bushiri if it is not to imbibe and understand the architecture of the politics and state presidency in Malawi? And what of politicians from other countries?

Finally, and this is where everything makes much sense, Bushiri left Malawi with a broken heart of a prophet without honour in his home. He was simply rejected. He was observably bitter and made a number of utterances that confirmed his frustration with Malawi’s rejection of his mission. He verbally fought back those that questioned his “authenticity”. In some cases, he literally called for a lesson on those who prided in embarrassing him. That was the Bushiri of 4 years ago. A Bushiri who could fight back if confronted.

We now have a Paul from that Saul. He has expanded his patience and calmness zone. He is ready to explain in greater detail to those who question his wealth and way of doing things. He is further ready to school and lecture those that aspire to make it big in business. But why this sudden change? Why is he now so eager to clear his and demystify himself? Is it maturity? Or it is that he can no longer afford to fight back the people that he will need soon? Whatever answer, he should not be ruled out!

Those who have been equally unlucky in getting a wife of their dream after numerous rebuffs know that any man who came close to their lady then was never discounted. Possibility of a coup was never ruled out. After all, he equally had all the tools to get her. Am I suggesting that Bushiri intends to stand as President for Malawi? Surely No. All I am saying is that he can only be ignored at one’s political peril!

Brian Carn Speaks Out Against Juanita Bynum Going from Prophetess to Bishop – BCNN1 WP

brian carn

In a Periscope video, Brian Carn spoke out against Juanita Bynum for going from Prophetess to Bishop, saying she was demoting herself.

Prophet Brian Carn was born on September 11th in Jacksonville, Florida. Raised in the admonition of the Lord, he received salvation at eight years old, and soon after, the gift of the Holy Spirit. In response to these life-altering events, Brian Carn experienced proliferated spiritual growth that catapulted him into ministering the Word of God at a very young age.

At the age of twelve, Brian Carn conducted his first three-day revival. Carn’s insatiable desire to resuscitate the church with the presence and power of God invoked him to dedicate eighty-eight days to prayer and fasting. During this time of consecration, Prophet Carn was publicly acknowledged by Benny Hinn at a crusade in Florida. Pastor Hinn prophesied that Brian Carn would walk in the same anointing and mantle that the Lord had placed on his own life, emphasizing that Carn would receive a “double” portion. This encounter further confirmed and catalyzed his fire for the Kingdom of God; he began to walk in his prophetic call.

In 2006, God sent Prophet Carn to the state of Virginia to preach a Sunday morning service. The anointing was so powerful that he was invited back for a three-night revival. Unbeknownst to him, these three nights would turn into a 10-week Move of God– cancers were healed, the blind were made to see and many souls were saved! Since then, Prophet Carn has received myriad invitations to minister at prominent engagements, including the COGIC 100th Year Celebration.

After years of ministry, Prophet Brian Carn has become an internationally recognized, prophetic voice. A preacher of Holiness and student of the Word, Brian Carn is renowned for his prophetic accuracy, humility and passion. God has equipped Prophet Carn to see and speak into the spirit realm− to confirm and to change. The miraculous and incessant testimonies attributed to his ministry are incalculable with many reporting physical and mental healing, financial breakthroughs, property acquisitions, home and auto acquisitions, debt cancellations and favorable legal outcomes. Although the power and glory of God are made manifest without exception, it is no fallacy that the office of a prophet is wrought with insurmountable and unrealized persecution; however, the blessings and promises of God continue to inundate the life of Prophet Brian Carn proving God’s faithfulness and divine hand upon his ministry.

Apostle John Chi | John Chi Ministries

John Chi Ministries

I was born on September 26, 1976 in Esu –Wum, Menchum Division of the North West Region of Cameroon out of a union between Mr Chi Victor and his wife Chi Lucy Ekange.

I left Primary School in 1989 and lacked funds to continue in secondary school. I then learnt motor electricity yet stopped for want of money. So, I left for the South West Region and worked with Honorable Efite Andrew as house Boy. One day in Mutengene, I saw a crowd listening to a preacher and went closer. Suddenly, the preacher spotted me out and prophesied to me saying: ‘God is going to use you mightily, make you a great and famous Prophet that would be known all over the world’. I took him for a fake pastor.

A few days later, our church pastor from Sierra-Leone, said the same thing as above and declared a period of fasting. I accepted but broke the fast before the due date. When it ended, he asked me to accept the calling. I was perplexed. He continued saying God had asked him to take me to his country. Finally, he told me to be humble and leave the rest to God.

In December 1999, we reached Lagos, Nigeria. He lodged me in his friend’s home and left. One day, the half paralyzed head of the household said he had a vision in which God told him to ask me not to continue to Sierra-Leone and that God shown him my star. He then asked me to join the SCOAN free evangelical school, which I did. After my first day at SCOAN, I realized the need to know more about Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Back home that night, I asked God to reveal who Prophet TB JOSHUA was. I soon fell into a trance, found myself in a room lit by the rays of a large star. A heard a voice saying: “stand up and go outside”, which I did. There, I saw three men dressed in white, all looking up to the sky and saying “Hosanna to the God of Prophet T. B. Joshua”. There stood the latter staring at me. I then woke up. Funny enough, the song I had been singing before going into the trance was still on my lips. The following night, I was again caught up in a trance and saw a man standing by my bed side. His body was like bronze and his eyes blazing like fire. He led me to Cameroon where he showed me places to be developed. Finally, he said: “whatever you ask the father in my name, I will do. Now conscious, the words I had just repeated after him were still on my lips.

Sometimes later, the pastor who had brought me to Lagos came and continued to his country without me since I was now worshipping at SCOAN

The building of the SCOAN main auditorium started and I was highly involved. One day, a man told me to follow him to Prophet T B JOSHUA’s office. The latter asked if I could go to his village. I gladly did with two other brothers. From there, I was sent to AKURE for over a year. When the mission was over, I thought of coming back to Cameroon and start a business venture. In a dream, Prophet T B JOSHUA met me and said, “You are not going anywhere for now, you’re supposed to be in vendor class”. I began doing well in class. As time went on, the Man of God came to me in a dream and said: ‘if you continue this way, you will make Cameroon great’. I then woke up.

I explained the dream to Mr Mbawa Patrick and the others in the sitting room. One of them, Mr. Joachim, went to SCOAN and told the coordinator, who related the dream to Prophet TB Joshua. The latter invited me to SCOAN and inquired about the dream. I was admitted into the vendor class. I thank senior prophet T. B. Joshua for what the Lord has used him to do in my life. Again in the year 2010, while on my usual assignment on the mountain, I had a vision and I got really scared. In that vision, I died and my spirit left me. I found myself before a huge gate with Michael as gate keeper. So many of us had died and were standing in a queue. Michael had a big book in front of him. Whenever he asked someone to come forward, that book would be opened and the person’s life on earth was cross checked. If you were qualified, the gate was opened for you to go in but, if your case was the opposite, you were sent to a desolate place.

When it was my turn, Michael opened the gate and asked me to go in. Once you get in, you are shown into a temple where everyone is dressed in white. The latter came in from the gate and told us that the high priest was soon going to come out. While waiting for the high priest’s arrival, everyone present listened to Senior Prophet TB Joshua’s message. When the high priest and the elders came out, Michael was among them, The High priest was led to the throne. I could not see his face, but for his hands, feet and the spots where he was nailed. I recognized a few people who came in through the gate with me. Later, the high priest started commissioning us.

He called the first person and assigned him an evangelist and made another a pastor. Then came my turn, he pointed at me, and said, ‘I am sending you as a prophet’. Moreover, He gave me a small cross, and asked what I desired. I requested for grace to fellowship with Him. He granted my request and I began coming down. I landed on earth, and woke up.

Terrified, I told my colleagues about the dream. A few days later on the mountain, I had another vision wherein I died and my spirit left me. The spirit watched my casket being carried in a Limousine. As the vehicle was about leaving for the village, it split into two. The front part carried my corpse while the rest of the car carried my spirit. At the village, the grave had been dug and the casket was taken for burial. My spirit went to the grave to view the corpse for the last time before burial. The faces of Apostles Paul, Peter, Elijah and Ezekiel were what I saw and got frightened. I identified their names on their foreheads. I woke up and told my colleagues. A week later, Prophet T. B. Joshua anointed us in the office of men of God.

Women Prophets

Women in Church History

by Rev. Kathryn J. Riss

The basic definition of a prophet is one who speaks for
God. Prophecy consists largely in speaking God’s word, calling people to
repentance, warning of future judgments, and praising the Lord. Whenever
the Holy Spirit moves on a chosen vessel to speak Divine communications, the
spirit of prophecy is at work.

The Bible makes no distinction between the prophetic
ministry of men and women. A prophet, whether male or female, is God’s servant,
called and anointed by Him. Prophets are chosen by God, who opens their
spiritual ears, gives them a message, and directs them as to when and to whom to
speak His Word. This Divine calling and direction constitutes the basis for
their spiritual authority. God often gives His prophets and prophetesses words
of rebuke and correction to those in authority. Often, prophets are rejected and
persecuted by those in power, because the messages God gives through them
frequently call these powers to account. Their responsibility is to speak the
word of the Lord and leave to God whether or not their messages are received,
believed and obeyed.

The exercise of the prophetic ministry is under the
authority of the prophet as directed by God; but in public settings, common
courtesy and due regard for the upbuilding of others are to be maintained. New Testament prophets are, along with
apostles, builders of the church’s foundation. They catch God’s vision for His
people, speak it boldly, and exhort others to follow Christ. As they pray and
fast together, seeking God’s will for the church, the Holy Spirit gives
direction to them for the church’s mission (Acts 13:1-3).

I Cor. 14:3-5 states, “Everyone who prophesies speaks to
men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort” and “builds up the
church.” Verses 29-31 state that prophets receive God’s revelation so that all
may learn and all may be comforted. Thus, the teaching function is inherent in
prophecy. That prophecy was not forbidden to women is clear from I Cor. 11:5,
where women’s public prophesying is presupposed and their deportment regulated. Paul was not trying to quench the Holy Spirit from speaking through women, but
he wanted to ensure that women who spoke for God acted modestly in a way that
could not bring legal accusations against the church. Doubtless, his concern to
protect the women leaders who were being persecuted in unspeakable ways
motivated his cautions.

Concerning the ministry of prophecy during the Church
Age, Acts 2:17-18 states, “And it shall come to pass, in the last days, says
God, I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters
shall prophesy.” Here, Peter quotes Joel 2:28 to explain the phenomena of
Pentecost. He goes on to show that in the Messianic “last days” that Jesus has
inaugurated, the prophecy of Joel is fulfilled. Without respect of persons, God
will pour out His Spirit upon all people, and they will speak Divine
revelations. The Gospel is offered to all, and the sign of the Holy Spirit, as
evidenced in speaking in tongues and prophecy, is offered freely to all who

On the day of Pentecost, one hundred and twenty
followers of Christ were filled with the Holy Ghost and spoke in languages they
had never learned, publicly proclaiming “the wonderful works of God.” According
to Acts 1:14, these one hundred and twenty Holy Spirit-inspired preachers
included both men and women. Their speech was not just ecstatic praise, although
that would be wonderful enough, but inspired preaching which listeners
understood in their own languages. Its purpose and effect was the conversion to
Christ of hearers from many lands and languages and their becoming unified as
members of His Body, the church, the community of believers in Jesus.

New Testament tongues and prophecy, given both to men
and women, thus have an evangelistic purpose. They are signs and wonders
demonstrating the marvel of God’s mercy and abundant grace offered to all and
poured out for all through Jesus Christ. This is why it is so important that the
freedom to prophesy and preach not be restricted. We can only demonstrate the
Gospel by allowing God to be God and letting all those He fills with His Spirit
and so directs testify of His wonderful works! The medium IS the message. A
church that allows only a few professionals to preach the Gospel conveys a false
message that free participation in the Gospel is only for the elite. But when
all believers are free to exercise the gifts God gives them, the Gospel is seen
for what it truly is–good news for all people..

Acts goes on to quote Joel that “even upon my
menservants and maidservants I will pour out of My Spirit, and they shall
prophesy.” Note that God calls those He sovereignly fills with His Spirit His
servants and says that “all flesh” shall prophesy. New Testament prophecy is not
reserved for the spiritually mature, but a gift God offers freely to all
believers. Thus, the prayer of Moses is fulfilled, “would God that all the
Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them.”
(Num. 11:29) Through the free exercise of inspired preaching in the church, God
demonstrates His extravagant grace!

The gift of the Holy Spirit, as evidenced by speaking in
unknown languages and declaring the praises of God, was also poured out upon new
Gentile converts to Christ at the household of Cornelius in Capernaum. Here, the
grace of God was extended cross-culturally. How difficult it must have been for
Peter and his Jewish-Christian friends to accept the fact that God had given His
Holy Spirit to Gentiles, who were despised as unclean by religious Jews! God had
to prepare Peter by giving him a vision three times. When the leaders of the
church at Jerusalem questioned what Peter had done in baptizing these Gentiles,
he said, “Since God gave them the same gift as to us, who believed in the Lord
Jesus, who was I to oppose God?” (Acts 11:17) This is an attitude all Christians
would do well to emulate.

God is no respecter of persons. There had always been
women prophets in Israel. Miriam, who by her faith and courage saved her baby
brother Moses from death when she was just a child, prophesied to the nation and
was set before them as a leader by God Himself along with Moses and Aaron (Micah
6:4). Miriam led the women of Israel in antiphonal praise to God at the Red Sea,
exulting with the men in God’s victory over Pharaoh’s armies.

Deborah– prophetess, judge and military leader– is the
most celebrated woman prophet of the Old Testament because she brought liberty
to Israel through her faith, courage and boldness. Judges 4:4 is generally
translated as “Deborah, a prophetess, wife of Lapidoth. . .” but the Hebrew word
here translated “wife” usually means “woman,” and Lapidoth is not attested
elsewhere as a man’s name. Rather, it is the ordinary feminine plural for the
word “fire.” As her career demonstrates, Deborah was a fiery woman! The Hebrew
is emphatic that SHE judged Israel at that time. Respecting her as a wise woman
who heard from God and knew His Law, the people of Israel came to her for
judgment. When the word of the Lord came to Deborah, she summoned Barak from
Naphtali and directed him to obey God by mustering troops against the oppressor
Sisera. When Barak agreed to do so only if Deborah accompanied him, she did not
hesitate to go and rally the troops.

After the victory, in the ode of celebration, Deborah
sings, “The villages ceased, they ceased in Israel until I, Deborah, arose,
until I arose a mother in Israel.” Deborah heard the word of the Lord and was
obedient to God’s call. In response to that call, not human invitation, Deborah
rose up to lead her nation, inspiring others to follow her faith. Because of her
courage and fear of God, not man, the nation was set free and enjoyed peace for
forty years.

The prophetess Huldah taught at the college in Jerusalem
and brought revival to the nation when she confirmed the Word of God brought to
her and prophesied judgment and grace to King Josiah, the high priest, and the
religious elite of her day. These men received and acted upon her declaration as
it was, the word of God, not a human. Note that this occurred during the
ministry of Jeremiah, who had been prophesying at Jerusalem for five years by
the time the Lord used Huldah to speak His message. God wasn’t out of men to
use! He deliberately chose to use this woman. According to the original edition
of the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, “The standing and reputation
of Huldah in the city are attested by the fact that she was consulted when the
Book of the Law was discovered. The king, high priest, counselors, etc. appealed
to her rather than to Jeremiah, and her word was accepted by all of the word of
Jehovah.” (“Huldah” by J. J. Reeve, ISBE, Vol. III, Chicago: The
Howard-Severance Company, 1915, p. 1389)

It is ironic that some today assume that God would have
His New Testament handmaidens–washed in the blood of His Son, filled with His
Holy Spirit, and set free from the Law–do less than His handmaidens under the
old covenant! Especially since Jesus told His followers, “greater works than
these shall ye do, because I go to my Father.” The only winner in this battle is
satan, who divides the church, silences the female majority, and deludes the
minority to trust in the flesh instead of God’s Spirit. Like Deborah, we need to
let God be God and be faithful to Him. Like Barak, we need to listen to God
speaking to us through His chosen prophets, whether male or female.

New Testament prophetesses include Anna (Luke 2:36-38),
the first to proclaim Jesus as the Redeemer publicly; Elizabeth (Luke 2:41-45),
who recognized Christ while still in His mother’s womb; Mary (Luke 2:46-55), who
through faith conceived God in the flesh by the power of the Holy Spirit; and a
false prophetess called Jezebel, whom God called to repent from immorality.

Prophets are well known for predicting future events;
and Mary, the mother of Jesus, did just that when she said, “The Lord has
regarded the humble estate of His handmaiden; from henceforth all generations
shall call me blessed.” (Lk.1:48) So did her cousin Elizabeth, who declared,
“Blessed is she who believed, for there shall be a performance of those things
which were told her from the Lord.” (Lk.1:45) Through the inspiration of the
Holy Spirit, Mary also rightly interpreted Scripture concerning the Abrahamic
Covenant as fulfilled in her Divine Son (vs.54-55).

The Book of Acts tells us that the evangelist Philip had
four virgin daughters who were prophetesses. The early fourth-century historian
Eusebius writes that the family moved to Asia. In the epistle of Polycrates,
bishop of Ephesus, to Victor, bishop of Rome, we learn that “in Asia, also,
mighty luminaries have fallen asleep . . .Philip, one of the twelve apostles who
sleeps in Hierapolis, and his two aged virgin daughters. Another of his
daughters, who lived in the holy Spirit, rests at Ephesus.” (Eusebius,
Book II, ch XXXI) Eusebius goes on to say, “But we must now show how Papias, coming to
them (at Hierapolis), received a wonderful account from the daughters of Philip. For he writes that in his time there was one raised from the dead.” (Ibid, ch.

Eusebius mentions this as part of Papias’ credentials,
who “professes to have received the declarations of the apostles from those that
were in company with them. . . ” Thus, the accounts Papias received from the
daughters of Philip, along with other trustworthy Christians who were likewise
acquainted with the apostles, were accepted as authoritative.

This account is significant because Papias was a
second-generation believer very highly regarded by the early church. A disciple
of John at Ephesus and link to the bishop and martyr Polycarp, Papias is our
earliest source for much post-apostolic tradition. Eusebius was the foremost
church historian of his age who documented both the New Testament and
sub-apostolic periods. The fact that Eusebius cites Papias’ contact with the
daughters of Philip as proof in part of Papias’ own credentials as a reliable
authority for early Christians shows the very high regard in which these
prophetesses were held.

That these women prophets were highly regarded by the
early church is evident from the writing of Apolinaris of Hierapolis, who in
refuting the claims of the ecstatic prophets Montanus and Maximilla, wrote, “But
the false prophet is carried away by a vehement ecstasy, accompanied by want of
all shame and fear. Beginning, indeed, with a designed ignorance and terminating
in involuntary madness. They will never be able to show that any of the Old or
any of the New Testament were thus violently agitated and carried away in
spirit. Neither will they be able to boast that Agabus or Judas or Silas or the
daughters of Philip or Ammias in Philadelphia or Quadratus or others that do not
belong to them ever acted in this way.” (Eusebius Book V ch. XVII) Here,
Aplinaris points to the daughters of Philip as examples of true, Godly prophets.

Quite early in the church’s history, Christians who
continued to exercise charismatic gifts including prophecy after the apostolic
age were considered to be heretics. With increasing persecutions against the
church, emphasis shifted from evangelism with signs following to courage and
witness under the tortures of martyrdom. Reverence for the apostles and prophets
who founded the church produced an attitude of humility which deterred people
from seeking to emulate their ministry themselves. The healing ministry
continued through the intercession of martyrs more than through living
believers; and with the formalization of the New Testament canon, the ministry
of prophets was seen as no longer needed. A growing church hierarchy had a
dampening effect on lay ministry. As the practice of charismatic gifts died out
in most churches, ecstatic prophets were viewed as too similar to pagan
prophets, with whom they were categorized.

During the latter part of the second century, a
Christian sect developed in Phrygia, led by one Montanus and two prophetesses,
Priscilla and Maximilla. Church historian Philip Schaff writes, “During the
bloody persecutions under the Antonines, which raged in Asia Minor and caused
the death of Polycarp AD155, all three went forth as prophets and reformers of
the Christian life, and proclaimed the near approach of the age of the Holy
Spirit and of the millennial reign in Pepuza, a small village of Phrygia, upon
which the new Jerusalem was to come down. Scenes took place similar to those
under the preaching of the first Quakers, and the glossolalia and prophesying in
the Irvingite congregations.” (Philip Schaff, History of The Christian Church,
New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1882-1910, vol 2, p. 414.)

The Montanists adhered to Catholic church doctrine but
called believers to a higher standard of holiness and to the practice of
prophetic gifts. They believed in preparing for the coming Judgment,
return of Christ and the millennial age by fasting and other ascetic practices,
terming themselves “spiritual” as opposed to “carnal” Christians. Montanist prophets
sometimes fell into trances and prophesied in the first person. These practices,
along with the fact that their leadership did not arise from the Catholic clergy
but from lay men and even women, brought criticism.

Philip Schaff wrote, “This brings us to another feature
of the Montanistic movement, the assertion of the universal priesthood of
Christians, even of females, against the special priesthood in the Catholic
church. Under this view, (Montanism) may be called a democratic reaction against
the clerical aristocracy, which from the time of Ignatius had more and more
monopolized all ministerial privileges and functions. The Montanists found the
true qualification and appointment for the office of teacher in direct endowment
by the Spirit of God, in distinction from outward ordination and episcopal
succession. They everywhere proposed the supernatural element and the free
motion of the Spirit against the mechanism of a fixed ecclesiastical order.” (Schaff,
op. cit, p. 418). Catholic clerics denounced the Montantists as presumptuous and
assumed that their supernatural manifestations were demonic, not divine. Most of
them were excommunicated.

The theologian Tertullian, who became a Montanist at the
turn of the third century, wrote, “. . . we have among us now a sister who has
been granted gifts of revelations, which she experiences in church during the
Sunday services through ecstatic vision in the Spirit. . . And after the people
have been dismissed at the end of the service it is her custom to relate to us
what she has seen. . .” (Tertullian, De Anima, ix c.210)

The Montanist movement attracted a wide following in
Rome, Asia, Constantinople and North Africa and continued in the church to the
sixth century, when its rigors caused it to die out. Schaff writes, “But the
religious earnestness which animated it, its prophecies and visions, its
millennarianism, and the fanatical extremes into which it ran, have since
reappeared, under various names and forms, and in new combinations, in
Novatianism, Donatism, the spiritualism of the Franciscans, Anabaptism, the
Camisard enthusiasm, Puritanism, Quakerism, Quietism, Pietism, Second Adventism,
Irvingism, and so on, by way of protest and wholesome reaction against various
evils in the church.” (Schaff, op. cit, p. 427) Many would include the
twentieth- century Pentecostal movement and its child, the charismatic movement,
with their emphasis on freedom in the Holy Spirit under the Lordship of Jesus
Christ, in this tradition.
